Teach your students how to manage themselves

 

Students don't learn effective self-management skills when most of their schedule is dictated for them. In this video, we break down the 3 things your students need to start managing themselves to be successful in work and life.

Most students are never taught how to manage themselves, their schedule or their goals.

We're Joseph and Matthew Moheban, the co-founders of 220 we create online courses to help students succeed in the real world.

The problem we're going to be talking about today is how students really don't know how to self-manage. They don't have good self-management techniques. They're never taught this through formal education and a lot of times even at home or in their out-of-school time programs.

Most students have every second of their day dictated to them whether it's through their parents, through the school bus, through the bells ringing that tell them exactly when they have to go to and from class. Students never really have to practice any formal self-management. But, what the pandemic has taught us is that more than ever we have to help young people understand how to manage themselves, manage their schedule, and manage all the things that they need to do to accomplish their ultimate goals.

The first step in this self management framework for students is the unfortunate but absolutely necessary to-do list.

It can look a lot of different ways but students have to have a system that works for them that captures everything they need to do on a daily and weekly basis. This needs to capture everything they need to do for school so that they don't miss any deadlines or miss any project or test dates. They need to have their sports and extracurricular items in there so that they don't miss any of those things that they're committed to, and they also need to include those things they're working on to turn their passions into skills- and do that on a regular basis. This can look a lot of different ways. It can be a digital to-do list; something like a google doc or notes in their phone. It can be the daily agenda that they get from their school. It can be just a written journal- that's what I really like to use these days is just writing out my to-do list in a journal and using that every single week.

It really doesn't matter as long as the system works for your student, they get excited about it and it's effective.

The second step in the framework students have to manage their own calendar and their own schedule.

One of the things that frustrates us the most is when we ask students what their schedule looks like for the week or ask them about what they have coming up on a specific day and they look at their parents. Or they look at their teacher. Or they look at their coach.

Now unfortunately I was guilty of this growing up in high school but now that i've seen the other side and understand how important of a skill it is for anyone. For any student/any career they want to have the ability to self-manage. Their calendar is absolutely critical. Again this can look several different ways. It could be replicated in a planner.

One of the tools that Joseph and i love is Google Calendar and the reason is because number one a lot of people have it. But number two it offers a ton of color customization you can create recurring events whether that's for practices, school or for those blocks where you want to be turning those passions into tangible skills.

Whatever works best for your student is fine but they need to be the ones that manage their schedule. They need to know what's coming up in the next week even in the next month they should put in everything into that calendar they should put in those blocks of time to work on their passions and skills on school extracurriculars.

But, they also need to put in family events things coming up so that they're the ones that can manage their schedule and they know exactly what is coming up so they can not only not miss anything but they can plan around their schedule and make sure they get the most critical things done that they need to get done.

Finally, step three students have to develop their own daily routines.

Routines are absolutely critical because it allows students to get in a rhythm and not always have to make decisions about what they're going to do that day. They can incorporate the critical habits and the exercises and things that put them in a good mood to put them in the best possible physical and mental state to perform at their best.

No matter what they're doing, there's three routines that we want your students to start using every single day. The first one is a morning routine. Starting your day the same way every single day so that you're not just rolling out of bed right before you have to get to school or to practice. It's actually establishing good habits that put you in the best possible state of mind to perform that day. This can look a lot of different ways. The best way to get started is to start small pick one or two many habits that you can start to incorporate every single day. This could be something like journaling or meditating or saying something that you're grateful for or listening to your favorite song to put you in the best mood. It can look a lot of different ways for students but just having that consistent practice as the way you start the day will put you in position to be your best self for the rest of the day.

Every great morning routine actually starts the night before and that's why it's so important to have an evening routine. This is something that you do one to two hours before bed to get you completely relaxed. Empty your mind, unplug and get away from some of the screens so that you can start to wind down your brain and be ready to go to bed at that consistent time so you get the full eight hours and start that awesome morning routine. Again, this can look a lot of different ways the best advice we have is to start small just pick one to two micro habits you can start doing to establish this evening routine.

The last routine is a wellness fitness routine students need to be doing something every single day to get moving whether that's just stretching walking or doing something more intense like weightlifting, running or playing a sport. The physical and mental benefits of having a wellness and fitness routine work wonders for student performance and productivity. No matter what they're doing now this is something new for one of your students.

Again our advice is to start small but do something that they can do every single day because the benefits are just too great to only do a couple times a week.
